For most of my life, Boston was my home. As with any place you grow up in, there were things I loved about the city and things I really disliked, but there was one thing I hated more than anything else:
Winter.
UGH.
Sure, summertime is glorious and autumn exquisite, but when snow is conceivable anytime between September and May, it nearly negates the beauty of having four seasons. An aversion to the longest one can really affect a girl.
So I’ve been thrilled to be in mild Istanbul this year as Boston gets repeatedly pummeled with snow.
It’s practically spring here. When the sun comes out, all of Kadikoy seems to promenade. The sidewalks are overrun with café tables and folks of all ages drinking tea or beer and cracking pistachios. Rooftops and seasides are packed with sun seekers.
But there’s that small part of me—that native New Englander inside me—who feels just the slightest bit nostalgic for snow. Not the ice and the cold and the dark and the wet… but for the white, and the quiet.
So in honor of the winter that continues in my old home, here are some snow pictures from the depths of winter. Don’t be fooled—it might look lovely, but winter in Boston is (for me) anything but lovable.
